Lee H. Gaudineer, Jr.

Lee H. Gaudineer, Jr., was born on March 10, 1932, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Lee H. Gaudineer, Sr., and Mildred Wallick Gaudineer. He passed away on July 16, 2008, at the age of 76. He is survived by his wife, Ellen, of Des Moines; two daughters, Kimber Foshe and her husband, Ken, of Johnston, and Kathi Slaughter and her husband, Tom, of Des Moines; two sons, Kevin and his wife, Karen, and Daran and his wife, Dionne, all of Des Moines; nine grandchildren; and several step-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Gaudineer graduated from Lincoln High School in Des Moines. He earned his B.A. from Grinnell College in 1957, his J.D. from Drake University in 1958, and his LL.M. from the University of Missouri in 1967. Gaudineer served in the armed forces for three years during the Korean Conflict. He married Pearl Ann Swindler of Des Moines in 1961 and was widowed in 1981. He married Ellen Brune in 1990.

Gaudineer was admitted into the bar in 1958. He served both as an assistant county attorney for Polk County and as an assistant city attorney for the city of Des Moines. He also served as a staff member of the Legislative Research Bureau and was a lawyer in private practice. Gaudineer was elected to the Iowa Legislature in November 1964. After serving one term in the Iowa House, he was elected to the Iowa Senate. Two years later, he won his bid for reelection. He served as the Minority Floor Leader during his final term before retiring in 1972 to resume his law practice.

Gaudineer partnered with Ray Austin to establish the law firm of Austin and Gaudineer, which later merged with other local law firms to become Gaudineer, Comito, and George. He was a member of the Polk County, Iowa State, and American Bar Associations. He was a lecturer at the Drake University College of Law.

Gaudineer was a Polk County Democrat. He was member of the Iowa House from 1965–1966 during the 61st General Assembly and a member of the Iowa Senate from 1967–1972 during the 62nd, 63rd, and 64th General Assemblies.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE EIGHTY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF IOWA: That in the passing of the Honorable Lee H. Gaudineer, Jr., the State has lost an honored citizen and faithful and useful public servant, and that the Senate by this resolution expresses its appreciation of his service to the State and tenders its sympathy and kindest regards to the members of his family.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That a copy of this resolution be spread upon the Journal of the Senate and that the Secretary of the Senate be instructed to forward an enrolled copy to the family of the deceased.
