Dubuque Republican 30th Senatorial District Dubuque County. Born March 14, 1940, in Tennyson, Wisconsin. Educated St. Andrew's High School, Tennyson, Wis., and Loras College in the field of political science and history. Founded three civic action corporations and is active in several civic action programs. John has been active in the Republican Party as chairman of the Loras College, County, and Second District Young Republicans and also served as organizational Chairman for Dubuque County's Central Committee. Married on June 14, 1967 to the former Gretchen Dye, who is a Clinical Psychologist with the Dubuque County School System. Gretchen is a graduate of Clarke College, Dubuque and received her Masters Degree from the U. of South Dakota. John is a member of the following organizations: Kiwanis, Jaycees, Amvets, American Political Science Assn., Knights of Columbus, U.S. Navy League, National Society of State Legislators, Toastmasters. Dubuque County Conservation Society and several Fraternal Societies. He is also on the board of the Northeast Iowa Boy Scout Council. John has received the following awards for his services: Sertoma International Service to Mankind Award; Realtors Man of the Year Award for his outstanding Service to his Community and Country; Jaycee Distinguished Service Award and several Jaycee of the Month Awards. He is the first republican legislator from Dubuque County since prohibition some 40 years ago. Manager, Walsh Store, one of three department stores operated by his family.
