WILLIAM J. COFFMAN

MR. SPEAKER: Your committee appointed to prepare a suitable resolution commemorating the life, character, and public service of the late Honorable William J. Coffman begs leave to submit the following memorial:

William J. Coffman was born on September 30, 1918, the son of William S. and Bertha Greenlee Coffman. He attended and graduated from the North English High School.

In 1940, Mr. Coffman married Jean Owen of North English, Iowa. To this union was born two daughters.

Mr. Coffman was in the general insurance business for twenty-six years. He served in the United States Navy for five years during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was Clerk of the District Court of Iowa County for two terms; town councilman of North English for four terms; Mayor of North English for one term; and was Service Officer of the American Legion for ten years. He was a member of the Methodist Church, Masons, Shrine, Consistory, Disabled American Veterans, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Mr. Coffman, a Republican, served as State Representative from Iowa County in the Fifty-seventh, Fifty-eighth, Fifty-ninth, Sixtieth, Sixtieth Extra, Sixty-first and Sixty-second Sessions.

Mr. Coffman passed away October 26, 1973, at the Veterans Hospital in Iowa City. Surviving are his wife, Jean of North English; two daughters, Helen J. Smock of North English and Kathy A. Stevens of Rensselaer, Indiana; and two grandchildren.

Therefore, Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Sixty-fifth General Assembly of Iowa: That in the passing of the Honorable William J. Coffman, the state has lost an honored citizen and a faithful and useful public servant, and the House by this resolution would express its appreciation of his service, and tender its sympathy to the members of the family.

Be It Further Resolved: That a copy of this resolution be spread upon the Journal of the House, and that the Chief Clerk be directed to forward an enrolled copy to the family of the deceased.
