LEROY S. MILLER

Mr. Speaker: Your committee, appointed to prepare a suitable resolution commemorating the life, character, and public service of the late Honorable Leroy S. Miller, begs leave to submit the following memorial:

Mr. Miller was born November 28, 1914 in Clarinda, Iowa. On February 14, 1935 he was united in marriage to Beulah Mary Otte, to which union two daughters were born.

As a student he was active in 4-H and FFA, and began farming directly out of high school in Page County. While farming, he helped form the Page County Angus Association, for which he served as secretary for many years. In 1946 the family moved to Shenandoah where he opened a farm equipment dealership. During his years as a businessman in Shenandoah he was active in many civic organizations, including: Junior Chamber of Commerce, President; Senior Chamber of Commerce, President; Shenandoah Industries, Executive Secretary; Shenandoah City Council; Yorktown School Board; Rotary International, Board of Directors; Izaak Walton, Board of Directors; Masonic Lodge No. 300; B.P.O. Elks; Order of Eastern Star No. 81; Honorary member of FFA in the Davis-Rodgers chapter in Shenandoah; and Mid-West Implement Dealers Association, Board of Directors. The National Brand Names Award for Implement Dealers was presented to Mr. Miller in 1960. Farm and Power Magazine and Commercial Credit Equipment Corporation honored him for his achievements in the farm equipment industry with special recognition awards. A life membership with the Junior Chamber of Commerce was presented in honor of his service to the organization. The members of the Elks Lodge bestowed Elk of the Year to him in 1962-63. An active member in the First Presbyterian Church, Mr. Miller served on all the governing bodies of the church.

A Republican, Mr. Miller represented Page County in the Sixtieth, Sixty-first, Sixty-second and Sixty-third General Assemblies.

Mr. Miller died November 5, 1982. Surviving him is his wife, Beulah, of Shenandoah; his daughters, Marcia Walker of Mansfield, Texas, and Nancy Carnagey of Shenandoah; seven grandchildren; a sister, Bertha Tomlinson, and a brother, Lyle Miller, both of Clarinda.

Now Therefore, Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Seventieth General Assembly of Iowa, That in the passing of the Honorable Leroy S. Miller, the state has lost an honored citizen and a faithful and useful public servant, and the House by this Resolution would express its appreciation of his service.

Be It Further Resolved, That a copy of this Resolution be spread upon the Journal of the House, and that the Chief Clerk be directed to forward an enrolled copy to the family of the deceased.
