Mr. Rider was born December 25, 1921, in Toledo, Iowa, and attended public schools at Garwin, graduating from Garwin High School. He was married to Dorothy Wickersham on October 27, 1946. Two daughters and two sons were born to them.

As well as being a farmer, seed dealer and wool buyer, Robert was a member of the Marshall County Farm Bureau, serving as the Township Chairman several years and County Vice President for one term. He was a member of the Moose Lodge, Central Iowa Coin Club, Central Iowa Squares, and received the honor of being named a Master Lamb Producer.

During his affiliation with the Democratic Party, Robert E. Rider served as Finance Chairman, Township Committeeman, and was the County Chairman one term. He was elected to State Representative from Marshall County to the Sixty-first General Assembly. In 1979, Marshall County and the Third Congressional District Democrats posthumously honored Mr. Rider for his contributions and service to the party.

Mr. Rider passed away July 1, 1978. Surviving him are his wife, Dorothy, Marshalltown; two daughters, Patricia E. Jordan and Nancy L. Rhoades, both of Marshalltown; two sons, Ronald L. Rider, Des Moines and Robert E. Rider, Jr., Marshalltown; his mother, Myrtle Rider, Gladbrook, Iowa; two sisters, Mary E. Otto, Gladbrook, Doris Christianson, Overland Park, Kansas; and ten grandchildren.

Now Therefore, Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Sixty-ninth General Assembly of Iowa, That in the passing of the honorable Robert E. Rider, the State has lost an honored citizen and a faithful and useful public servant, and the House by this Resolution would express its appreciation of his service.

Be It Further Resolved, That a copy of this Resolution be spread upon the Journal of the House, and that the Chief Clerk be directed to forward an enrolled copy to the family of the deceased.
