Born August 18, 1818, in Onondaga County, New York. At the age of 18 he began teaching in a country school for several years. In 1839, he moved west and settled at West Point, Lee County, Iowa. He then moved to Fort Madison and began reading law under Judge Miller. In October 1851, he married Miss Catherine Brees. In August 1854 he was elected representative of the 35th district composed of Marion, Warren, and Madison Counties. He also represented Marion County in the legislature. He ran for Congress but was defeated. On May 19, 1856, he was admitted to practice in U.S. District Court of Iowa in Burlington. On April 23, 1868, he moved from Knoxville, Iowa to Keokuk, at which place he remained until May 20, 1870, when he removed to Staten Island, New York. He soon became dissatisfied in New York. In May 1872 he moved back to Knoxville. He organized and became first president of the Marion County National Bank and continued in business there until he moved to Kansas and located in Newton in June 1873. On the first day of July 1873, he opened the Harvey County Savings Bank. He sold it on April 1, 1879. On December 23, 1879, with his sons, he opened a bank in Wellington, and on April 10, 1882, he opened another in Caldwell, Sumner County. He ran for political office again. On March 27, 1869, he demitted from Oriental Lodge No. 61 in Knoxville, Iowa. He demitted from Oskaloosa Council No. 7 on February 3, 1874. He was a charter member of Arkansas Valley Chapter No. 27 on October 20, 1875.
