MR. PRESIDENT: Your committee appointed to prepare a suitable resolution commemorating the life, character and public service of the late Honorable Martin Wiley, begs leave to submit the following memorial:
Martin Wiley was born in Cedar Rapids, Linn County, Iowa on June 30, 1900. He attended school in Cedar Rapids. On December 25, 1928, he was married to Ernestine Bice of Walker, Iowa. Mr. Wiley lived his entire life in the house in which he was born.
He was owner-operator of the Wiley Fruit Farm since 1929. He was a member of the Linn County board of supervisors from 1951 to 1960 and served on the board of directors of Iowa Good Roads Association, the All Iowa Fair, The Family Service Agency and the Iowa Consistory.
Mr. Wiley served as President of the West Side Civic Club and was a past president of the Cedar Rapids Executives Club. He was a member of Elks, Kiwanis, the South Side Civic Club, the Farm Bureau, the El Kahir Shrine and the American Road Builders Association. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. He served as President of the Sixth District County Officers Association; was a past master of Rob Morris Lodge, A.F. & A.M., a Past Master of Kadosh of Iowa Consistory and held the 33rd degree in Masonry.
Mr. Wiley was elected to the Iowa Senate in 1960 and served in the 59th and Sixtieth General Assemblies.
Mr. Wiley died at the age of 77 on November 7, 1977. Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Mrs. H. Thomas DeWees, Clarendon Hills, Illinois; a brother, S.E. Wiley of Springfield, Illinois; and two grand-daughters.
Now Therefore, Be It Resolved by the Senate of the Sixty-seventh General Assembly of Iowa, That in the passing of the Honorable Martin Wiley, the state has lost an honored citizen and a faithful and useful public servant, and the Senate by this resolution would express its appreciation of his service to his community, state and nation and tender its sympathy and kindest regards to the members of his family.
Be It Further Resolved, That a copy of this Resolution be spread upon the Journal of the Senate, and that the Secretary of the Senate be directed to forward an enrolled copy to the family of the deceased.
