EUGENE E. HALLING
Mr. Speaker: Your committee, appointed to prepare a suitable resolution commemorating the life, character, and public service of the late Honorable Eugene E. Halling, begs leave to submit the following memorial:
Eugene E. Halling was born May 20, 1895 in Orient, Iowa. On December 28, 1920, he was united in marriage to Margaret E. Shafar.
Mr. Halling was a graduate of Grinnell College and served in the United States Army during World War I. He served several years on the Hill of Zion Consolidated School Board. He was a deacon emeritus of the Hill of Zion Church and a charter member of the Orient American Legion and Greenfield Barracks 1533 of World War I. He farmed his family’s farm in Adair County for about fifty-five years before retiring and moving into Creston in 1975.
A Republican, Mr. Halling represented Adair County in the Fifty-sixth, Fifty-seventh, Fifty-eighth, Fifty-ninth and Sixtieth General Assemblies. For twenty years he was a precinct committeeman for the Republican Party.
Eugene E. Halling died on February 18, 1982, at Creston, Iowa, at the age of 86. Survivors include his wife, Margaret, of Creston and a sister, Fern Johnston, of Huntington Beach, California. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Annabelle and Faye, and his parents, Mathias E. and Amanda Halling.
Now Therefore, Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Seventieth General Assembly of Iowa, That in the passing of the Honorable Eugene E. Halling the state has lost an honored citizen and a faithful and useful public servant, and the House by this Resolution would express its appreciation of his service.
Be It Further Resolved, That a copy of this Resolution be spread upon the Journal of the House, and that the Chief Clerk be directed to forward an enrolled copy to the family of the deceased.
