ROY J. SMITH

Mr. Speaker: Your committee, appointed to prepare a suitable resolution commemorating: the life, character and public service of the late Honorable Roy J. Smith, begs leave to submit the following memorial:

Roy J. Smith was born September 28, 1889, in Whiteside County, Illinois, and attended school in Hardin County, Iowa. He later was a teacher in the Hardin County School District.

In 1911, he married Flossie M. Lepley, and was the father of two daughters, Coniston Zeller of Alden, Minnesota, and Betty Lou Baker of Anaheim, California.

He moved to Dickinson County in 1913, and was owner and operator of the Jersey Dell Farm. He was a member of the National Dairy Association and was past president of the Iowa Dairy Commission. He was active in 4-H Club work and helped establish the summer theater and summer school in the Lake Area. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Shrine, Rotary, and the Methodist Church.

A Republican, Mr. Smith served as representative from Dickinson County during the Fifty-third, Fifty-fourth, Fifty-fifth, Fifty-sixth, Fifty-ninth and Sixtieth General Assemblies.

Mr. Smith passed away on July 27, 1975, at the Dickinson County Memorial Hospital. Services were held at the United Methodist Church with burial at the Lake View Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Flossie; two daughters, Mrs. Coniston Zeller of Alden, Minnesota, and Mrs. Betty Baker of Anaheim, California; two grandchildren and six great-grandĀ­children.

Therefore, Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Sixty-sixth General Assembly of Iowa: That in the passing of the late Honorable Roy J. Smith, the state has lost an honored citizen and a faithful and useful public servant, and the House by this resolution would express its appreciation of his service, and tender its sympathy to the members of his family.

Be It Further Resolved: That a copy of this resolution be spread upon the Journal of the House, and that the Chief Clerk be directed to forward an enrolled copy to the family of the deceased.
