Newton Jasper County Republican Born April 23, 1895 in Crary, North Dakota. Graduate of the University of North Dakota. High school teacher and principal for five years. Married Edward L. Nelson of Grinnell, Iowa in 1920. Moved to Newton in 1925. Mr. Nelson is assistant secretary of the Maytag Company and a member of its "Twenty-five Year" club. Family consists of two children: James, professor of economics, Amherst College, and Phyllis, instructor of history at the State University of Iowa. Member of the Congregational church, past president of the Newton Woman's Club, Y.W.C.A., League of Women Voters, and Jasper county Child Welfare Association. Member of the Red Cross and Community Chest boards. Worthy High Priestess of White Shrine and member of Delta Kappa Gamma, honorary educational sorority. President of Iowa League of Women Voters, secretary of Iowa Child Welfare Committee and Iowa Legislative Council, and treasurer of Council for Better Education. Serving first term.
