RICHARD C. BERRY

MR. SPEAKER: Your committee, appointed to prepare a suitable resolution commemorating the life, character and public service of the late Honorable Richard C. Berry, begs leave to submit the following memorial:

Richard C. Berry was born in Durham county, England, November 8, 1876, and passed away at Fort Dodge, Iowa, March 4, 1953, at the age of 76 years, three months and twenty-four days.

He was the son of John and Mary Berry. He came to America with his parents at the age of five years. His first home in America was in Greene county, Iowa, where he lived for about ten years. Leaving Greene county, he moved to Pomeroy where he attended the local high school, after which he took a course in Highland Park College in Des Moines and also a course in Chillicothe Business College in Chillicothe, Missouri. After his graduation from there, he returned to Pomeroy where he lived until his death.

He began his work in the Pomeroy State Bank in 1899 and remained in its service until his retirement in 1947, having served for many years as cashier and vice president.

He was greatly interested and was very active in the affairs of the community, serving for many years as a member of the town council and of the local school board, and at the time of his death was clerk of Butler township. He also served his county as Representative in the Legislature for two terms, serving in the Fifty-third and Fifty-fourth Sessions of the Legislature.

Mr. Berry was a member of the Woodman, Masonic and Eastern Star Lodges and was active in them.

On June 19, 1904, he was united in marriage with Miss Nellis Holmes. Three children were born to them. Two of them, twins, Paul and Pauline, died soon after birth in 1920.

He was preceded in death by his wife, who passed away July 27, 1944.

Mr. Berry is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Gladys Albrecht, and three grandsons.

Therefore, Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Fiftyfifth General Assembly of Iowa, That in the passing of The Honorable Richard C. Berry, the state has lost an honored citizen and a faithful, useful public servant, and the House, by this resolution, would express its appreciation of his service and tender its sympathy to the members of his family.

Be It Further Resolved, That a copy of this resolution be spread upon the Journal of the House and that the Chief Clerk be directed to forward an enrolled copy to the family of the deceased.

MELVIN WILSON,

ALBERT WEISS,

GUY G. BUTLER,

Committee.
