BERT N. WHITAKER
MR. SPEAKER: Your committee, appointed to prepare a suitable resolution commemorating the life, character and public service of the late Honorable Bert N. Whitaker, begs leave to submit the following memorial:
Bert N. Whitaker was born April 22, 1887, at Blue Grass, Iowa. He passed away February 24, 1955, at the age of 67.
He moved with his parents to Killduff when he was two years old. He lived in the Killduff community until 1908 when he was married to Susan Lincoln. They moved to Grinnell in 1924 and seven years later he established the livestock exchange.
Mr. Whitaker was mayor of Grinnell for four terms, serving the city from 1933 to 1939, and again from 1941 to 1943. He was a director of the Grinnell State Bank and the Grinnell Federal Savings and Loan Association.
He served in the Iowa House of Representatives in the Fifty-first session.
Mr. Whitaker was a prominent citizen of Grinnell and a community leader. He was well liked and one of the friendliest men in the community.
Surviving Mr. Whitaker are his wife, Susan, of Grinnell; two daughters, Mrs. Virgil Jones and Mrs. Kenneth Palmer of Grinnell; four grandchildren, four sisters and two brothers. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary, in 1930; and his parents.
Therefore, Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Fiftysixth General Assembly of Iowa: That in the passing of the Honorable Bert N. Whitaker, the people of Poweshiek County and of the entire State of Iowa have sustained a great loss and the House expresses its appreciation of his character and public service, and tenders, by this resolution, its sincere and heartfelt sympathy to his beloved family in their sorrow and loss.
Be It Further Resolved: That a copy of this resolution be spread upon the Journal of the House and that the Chief Clerk be directed to forward an enrolled copy to the family of the deceased.
