GUSTAV T. KUESTER
Mr. Speaker: Your committee, appointed to prepare a suitable resolution commemorating the life, character, and public service of the late Honorable Gustav (Gus) T. Kuester, begs leave to submit the following memorial:
Gustav Kuester was born January 25, 1888. On April 4, 1917, he was united in marriage to Elda G. Weaver. To this union two children were born, one son and one daughter.
Mr. Kuester was always willing to serve his community. He attended school in rural Cass County. He served as Township Clerk for 4 years, Election Clerk for 6 years and Treasurer of the Noble Township Mutual Insurance Association for 42 years. He was a member of the Noble Center United Methodist Church and served as a Sunday school teacher for 8 years, a member of the Noble Center Board of Trustees for 15 years and served on the Noble Center Cemetery Board for 5 years. He also served as a trustee of the Atlantic Hospital for many years. On April 29, 1946, he was featured in an article in Time Magazine with his picture on the front page. The title of the article was “Man Against Hunger”. Many of his friends urged him to run for Governor, but he always refused to run for the top office of Iowa.
Mr. Kuester, a Republican, served as a State Representative from Cass County from 1935 through 1956. He was Speaker of the House during the Fifty-second and Fifty-third General Assemblies.
Mr. Kuester passed away on December 21, 1980. He is survived by his son, Dale Kuester, of Griswold; his daughter, Mrs. Merrill (Shirley) Coon of Ankeny; 2 granddaughters and a brother, Carl, of Griswold. He was preceded in death by his wife and 4 sisters and 4 brothers.
Now Therefore, Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Sixty-ninth General Assembly of Iowa, That in the passing of the Honorable Gustav T. Kuester, the state has lost an honored citizen and a faithful and useful public servant, and the House by this Resolution would express its appreciation of his service.
Be It Further Resolved, That a copy of this Resolution be spread upon the Journal of the House, and that the Chief Clerk be directed to forward an enrolled copy to the family of the deceased.
