MR. SPEAKER: Your committee, appointed to prepare a suitable resolution commemorating the life, character and public service of the late Honorable Cassius Allen Bryson, begs leave to submit the following memorial:
Cassius Allen Bryson was born in Ackley, Iowa, May 18, 1874. He was a life-long resident of Hardin county and a prominent political figure for a half century.
Mr. Bryson was the son of a prominent attorney and founder of the Ackley Tribune. His mother was Cathagenia Allen Bryson. He was graduated from the Ackley High School and moved with his parents to Iowa Falls in the spring of 1894. He studied law in his father's office before attending Drake University School of Law, Des Moines, Iowa, from which he graduated in 1897. He began the practice of law in Iowa Falls in 1899, joining his brother, Boyd, in a partnership to succeed their father. He was a member of the Hardin County Eleventh Judicial District, and State Bar Association.
Mr. Bryson had a long record of political service, as well as being active in the affairs of veterans’ organizations. For many years he had served as permanent chairman of the Memorial Day Committee in Iowa Falls.
In the field of politics he was one of the county’s powers in Republican circles, being county chairman of the party for 22 years, and serving in the Forty-ninth, Fiftieth, Fiftieth Extra, Fifty-first, Fifty-second and Fifty-second Extra Sessions of the Iowa Legislature.
He was Iowa Falls city attorney at the time of his death, a post he had held continuously since 1924, after earlier serving in the same capacity from 1901 to 1903. He was Hardin county attorney for three terms, from 1910 to 1916. He also was a member of the Iowa Falls fire department for 40 years, from which he retired many years ago.
Mr. Bryson was a member of the Sons of Union Veterans, and for three years served as state commander of the Iowa division. He was also national counselor of the organization.
He was married November 30, 1899, at Des Moines to his first wife, Miss Jessie F. Reissner, who died March 26, 1946. Three children, all of whom are living, were born to the couple. They are Mrs. Paul E. Jones, Sr., of Iowa Falls; two sons, Philip of Ironwood, Michigan, and Robert of Moorpark, California. His present wife, May, also survives him.
Mr. Bryson died on March 29, 1952, at the age of 77 years, after a few weeks’ illness.
Therefore, Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Fifty-fifth General Assembly of Iowa, That in the passing of the Honorable Cassius Allen Bryson the state has lost an honored citizen and a faithful, useful public servant, and the House by this resolution, would express its appreciation of his service, and tender its sympathy to the members of his family.
