John A. Davenport was born at Newport, Washington county, Ohio, on January 24, 1871. His parents were George Davenport, who was an officer in the Civil War, and his mother was Mary Reckard Davenport of Marietta, Ohio.

Mr. Davenport came to Sioux City in 1882 with his parents and nine brothers and sisters. He was a member of the Morningside Presbyterian church, many Masonic orders and of civic, fraternal and patriotic orders. He enlisted in the Spanish-American War, serving throughout the conflict with honor. He was connected with the wholesale grocery business for many years in Sioux City. In 1929 he was honored by the people of Woodbury county by being elected to the office of Sheriff in which capacity he served four years.

On October 5, 1904, he was married to Flora Richardson at New Matamoras, Ohio. Mr. Davenport was a member of the Forty-eighth General Assembly of Iowa in the capacity of Representative of Woodbury county and passed away during his term of office after a brief illness on October 16, 1939, at Sioux City. He is survived by his beloved wife, one son, Samuel R. Davenport, Ph. D., of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, one granddaughter, Rosalyn Gay Davenport of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and five brothers and sisters.

Therefore, Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Forty-ninth General Assembly, That the state has lost a valued and beloved citizen, and the House of Representatives would tender, by this resolution, its sincere, heartfelt sympathy to his beloved family in their sorrow.

Be It Further Resolved, That a copy of this resolution be spread upon the Journal of the House and that the Chief Clerk be directed to forward an enrolled copy to the family of the deceased.
