FRED BRUENE

Mr. Speaker: Your committee, appointed to prepare a suitable resolution commemorating the life, character, and public service of the late Honorable Fred Bruene, begs leave to submit the following memorial:

Fred Bruene was born April 17, 1888. He was united in marriage to Luella Benz on January 26, 1916, and they were blessed with two sons and three daughters.

He received his BA degree from Charles City College, MA from University of Iowa, Honorary Doctor of Science from Morningside College.

He was a member of the Methodist Church and was a long-time Lay Minister. He held the offices of Chairman of Official Board, Sunday School Superintendent, and was a sunday school teacher for over 40 years. He was an adult leader of the Tama County Christian Youth and served 9 years as a school board member. He was instrumental in organizing the Tama County Soil Conservation District and was one of its first commissioners. He was President of the Tama County Farm Bureau for two years.

He was also a member of the following Iowa State University Committees: ISU Agricultural Foundation, Trustee, ISU Committee for Agricultural Development, ISU Dean of Agricultural Development, ISU Dean of Agriculture Advisory Committee, and the ISU Agricultural Extension Advisory Committee. He starred in a soil conservation movie filmed by ISU in about 1953 and also had a lead in another ISU production entitled “The Pig and the Public”. The Bruene family was written up by Life Magazine in the January 3, 1955 issue in an article entitled “The Farmer and His Government”.

Representative Bruene was affiliated with the Democratic Party and represented Tama County in the Forty-seventh General Assembly.

Mr. Bruene passed away on May 1, 1980 and is survived by his wife, Luella, and his children: Warren Bruene of Dallas, Texas; Richard Bruene of Gladbrook, Iowa; Doris Richards of Jackson, Mississippi; Jean Polhemus of Spokane, Washington and Merle Turner of Postville, Iowa. He had 16 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Now Therefore, Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Sixty-ninth General Assembly of Iowa, That in the passing of the Honorable Fred Bruene, the State has lost an honored citizen and a faithful and useful public servant, and the House by this Resolution would express its appreciation of his service.

Be It Further Resolved, That a copy of this Resolution be spread upon the Journal of the House, and that the Chief Clerk be directed to forward an enrolled copy to the family of the deceased.
