WILLIAM G. WOOD

MR. SPEAKER: Your committee, appointed to prepare a suitable resolution commemorating the life, character and public service of the late Honorable William G. Wood, begs leave to submit the following memorial:

William G. Wood was born on a farm near Albia, Iowa, May 15, 1873. and passed away June 30, 1958, at the age of 85 years. His parents, John H. Wood and Mary J. Van Schoiack Wood, were pioneer residents of Monroe county.

He was educated in the public schools and the high school of Albia.

On May 8, 1895, he was married to Alice M. Jewell of Geneva, Nebraska, and to this union three children were born: Mildred Lucile, deceased, George W. and John R.

Mr. Wood lived most of his life in Albia, and began his business career there as a cigar maker. He was a partner in the hardware firm of Darby & Wood. In recent years he was public relations representative for the Iowa Southern Utilities Company.

A 62-year Mason, he was a past master of the Albia lodge and a member of the White Shrine. He was a member of First Christian church.

Mr. Wood was postmaster from 1920 until 1933, and was elected to the Legislature after leaving that office, serving in the Forty-seventh and Forty-eighth sessions of the General Assembly.

He was a close friend and political adviser to the late Nate Kendall, who served as governor and in Congress.

He is survived by two sons, John R. Wood of Albia and George Wood of Washington, D. C., and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Mildred Darby, in 1933, and by his wife in 1945.

Therefore, Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Fifty-eighth General Assembly of Iowa: That in the passing of the Honorable William G. Wood the state has lost an honored citizen and a faithful, useful servant, and the House, by this resolution, would express its appreciation of his service, and tender its sympathy to the members of his family.

Be It Further Resolved: That a copy of this resolution be spread upon the Journal of the House and that the Chief Clerk be directed to forward an enrolled copy to the family of the deceased.
