CHRIS REESE

MR. PRESIDENT: Your committee, appointed to prepare suitable resolutions commemorating the life, character and public service of the late Honorable Chris Reese of Algona, Iowa, begs leave to submit the following:

Chris Reese was born June 21, 1881 at Hovedgaard, Denmark. He came to the United States with his parents in 1891 and settled at Storm Lake. He was in the newspaper business since 1906 and edited the Lynn Grove Independent, Remsen News, Carroll Times, Marshalltown Marshalltownian, Marcus News, Fenton Reporter and the Whittemore Champion. He was co-editor of Upper Des Moines at Algona from 1941 to July, 1945, when he purchased Ocheyedan Press. He returned to Algona in 1947 and since then was with the Upper Des Moines.

Mr. Reese was elected to the Senate in 1932 and served in 1933 and during the special session in 1935. He was named to the State Highway Commission and later was Assistant State Printer until 1939.

Mr. Reese was a professional musician and past president of the Iowa Federation of Musicians Union. He had his own orchestra at one time.

Mr. Reese was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Calicex Society, Moose Lodge, Iowa Press Columnists and the Izaak Walton League.

Mr. Reese is survived by his wife, Margaret, daughters, Beverly (Mrs. Eugene Zender), Algona, and Marian (Mrs. Carl Seifried), Faribault, Minnesota; sons, Creston M. of Columbus, Ohio, and Donald M. of Tucson, Arizona, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Be It Resolved by the Senate of the Fifty-Seventh General Assembly: That in the passing of the Honorable Chris Reese the state has lost a valuable and honorable citizen and one who contributed unselfish service to the State of Iowa.

Be It Further Resolved: That a copy of this resolution be spread on the Journal of the Senate, and that the Secretary of the Senate be directed to forward an enrolled copy to the members of the family of the deceased.
