MR. SPEAKER: Your committee, appointed to prepare a suitable resolution commemorating the life, character and public service of the late Honorable O. P. Morton, begs leave to submit the following memorial:

Mr. Horton was born in Bremer county in 1860. He spent the years 1862 and 1863 with his parents in Fort Randall and Fort Sully, South Dakota, where his father was stationed as a member of the 7th Iowa Cavalry. He lived in Iowa Falls from 1864 to 1875, when he, with the family, moved to the farm in Wright county.

He attended school in the country and at Iowa Falls. He taught school during the winters from 1878 to 1891. He helped to form and carry on many of the farm organizations of the county.

Mr. Morton was a director and member of the executive board of the Farmers Insurance Company of Wright County since its organization in 1890. He was always interested in schools and was secretary or treasurer of the local school board since 1896.

He was married to Anna H. Birdsall in 1892. Mrs. Birdsall died in 1927.

He was a member of the I.O.O.F.

Mr. Morton served as Representative from Wright county in the Forty-fourth Session of the General Assembly. He passed away March 12, 1951.

Therefore, Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Fifty-fifth General Assembly of Iowa, That in the passing of the Honorable O. P. Morton, the people, not only of Wright county, but of the entire state of Iowa, have sustained a great loss.

Be It Further Resolved, That a copy of this resolution be spread upon the Journal of the House and that the Chief Clerk be directed to forward an enrolled copy to the family of the deceased.
