HENRY E. KOHLER

MR. SPEAKER: Your committee, appointed to prepare a suitable resolution commemorating the life, character and public service of the late Honorable Henry E. Kohler, begs leave to submit the following memorial:

Henry E. Kohler was born in Elgin, Fayette County, Iowa, March 6, 1874. He moved with his parents to Fredonia Township, Plymouth County, in 1879.

He received his early education in a rural school. Later he attended normal and business college in Le Mars, Iowa.

He married Lucy Weber, a native of Moline, Illinois, in 1899. To this union were born five children, Elmer, Herbert, George, Frank and Doris.

Mr. Kohler established himself as an extensive and successful farmer in Fredonia Township.

Mr. and Mrs. Kohler rtired from active farming and moved to Le Mars in 1919. Mrs. Kohler died on April 12, 1929, after a lingering illness.

On June 10, 1930, Mr. Kohler married Henrietta Degner. Also, in 1930, he was elected to represent Plymouth County in the State Legislature on the Democratic ticket. He served one term in the Forty-fourth General Assembly. His health did not permit him to seek a second term.

Mr. Kohler was a man of integrity, a true Christian gentleman and a good American. His kindly, genial disposition endeared him to a large circle of neighbors and friends. He was a man of high ideals, a lover of nature and of the beautiful.

Henry Kohler passed away on Sunday, December 26, 1954, at Long Beach, California, and is buried at Rose Hill Cemetery, Whittier, California. His widow, four children, a stepson, ninegrandchildren and one great-grandson survive him.

Therefore, Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Fifty-sixth General Assembly of Iowa: That in the passing of the Honorable Henry E. Kohler, the state has lost an honored citizen and a faithful, useful public servant, and the House, by this resolution, would express its appreciation of his service, and tender its sympathy to his wife and the members of his family.

Be It Further Resolved: That a copy of this resolution be spread upon the Journal of the House and that the Chief Clerk be directed to forward an enrolled copy to the family of the deceased.
