Senator from the third district, composed of Davis and Appanoose counties, was born on a farm in Van Buren county, Iowa, June 12, 1881. His parents, John M. and Alice Dyer Carroll, moved to the old Carroll homestead in Salt Creek township, Davis county, when he was two years of age. There the father lived until his death and there the mother still resides. He received his early education in the rural schools, later attended the Southern Iowa Normal, and in 1908 was graduated from the Iowa State Teachers' college. Taught in the public schools, was county superintendent, county chairman of the Y.M.C.A. and the united war drives, chairman republican county central committee of Van Buren county, and later of Davis. For seven years was an employee of the Green Bay and Tisdale lumber companies. Eight years ago he became a partner in the hardware and implement business with the firm name of Carroll and Carroll, operating stores in Bloomfield and Pulaski, Iowa. In 1914 was married to Bess Dundore of Perry, Iowa. Has one daughter, Pauline. Member of Knights of Pythias. Elected senator in 1928. Always a republican.
