CHARLES S. BROWNE

MR. PRESIDENT: Your committee, appointed to prepare suitable resolutions commemorating the life, character and public service of the late Honorable Charles S. Browne, begs leave to submit the following:

Charles S. Browne was born in Baldwin, Jackson County, Iowa, the son of Rufus and Elizabeth Oberfield Browne, on June 22, 1875, and died at his home in Monmouth, Iowa, August 30, 1953. His education was acquired in the public schools of Jackson County and he taught school at the age of eigtheen years.

November 28, 1906, Mr. Browne married Dora Chase, who survives. In addition, one daughter, Mrs. Lester T. Lind of Des Moines, and three sons, Rufus S. of Onslow; Andrew W. C. of Monmouth; and Charles J. of Holyoke, Colorado, also survive, and one brother, Arthur, of Maquoketa, Iowa, and six grandchildren.

Mr. Browne had always lived in the County of Jackson. His entire life was devoted to farming. He served in the state legislature as Senator from Jackson County from 1921 to 1928 and his chief interest at that time was bettering roads in rural communities.

Be It Resolved by the Senate of the Fifty-sixth General Assembly: That in the passing of Charles S. Browne the State of Iowa has lost a valuable and honorable citizen and by this resolution tenders its sincere sympathy to the surviving members of the family.

Be It Further Resolved: That a copy of this resolution be spread on the Journal of the Senate, and that the Secretary of the Senate be directed to forward an enrolled copy to the members of the family of the deceased.
