HONORABLE LEONARD E. STANLEY

MR. SPEAKER: Your committee, which was appointed to report resolutions commemorating the life, character and services of the late Leonard E. Stanley, begs leave to submit the following report and moves its adoption:

Leonard E. Stanley was born in Columbiana county, Ohio, April 4, 1853, and died at his home in Corning, Iowa, August 1, 1932.

When a few weeks old he came with his parents to Johnson county, Iowa, thence to Warren county. Mr. Stanley has been closely associated with the growth and development of Adams county since the settlement days of the early seventies.

On February 4, 1879, he was married to Hannah Hogenkamp. To this union were born six children, five of whom, along with the widow, survive the deceased.

Mr. Stanley’s church affiliations have been, for the past thirty-five years, with the Congregational church in Corning, where he served on the Board of Deacons for several years. He was born and reared in a Quaker home and those early influences have ever dominated his life.

The abilities and character of Mr. Stanley have been utilized in public office as Clerk of the Court 1898-1902, town councilman, State Representative to the Thirty-seventh General Assembly, and Justice of the Peace for several years. He has been for many years a member of Instruction Lodge No. 275 A. F. & A. M. and of the Modern Woodmen of America.

The keynote of Mr. Stanley’s life has been common honesty and genuine good will. No biting envy or petty jealousy found refuge in his generous mind. Firm in his own beliefs, be never sought to force his views upon others, contrary to their own judgments. A lovable personality has gone but the soul of the man will live like a burning flame in the community to make cleaner and more wholesome every segment of society with which he came in contact.

Therefore, Be It Resolved, That in the passing of the Honorable Leonard E. Stanley the state has lost a valuable and honored citizen, a man of sterling quality and irreproachable character, and the House of Representatives of Iowa would tender by this resolution its sympathy to the widow, and the children who survive.

Be It Further Resolved, That a copy of these resolutions be printed in the Journal of the House as an expression of the life and worth of the deceased and engrossed copy hereof be transmitted to the widow and children.

F. H. BEATH,

R. C. HOPP,

PAUL L. MILLHONE,

Committee.

Unanimously adopted April 11, 1933.
