Senator from the twenty-sixth district, composed of Linn county, was born June 5, 1857, in Bradford, Iowa. Attended the graded schools of Cedar Falls, Charles City and Independence. Was employed as telegrapher, station agent and traveling freight and passenger agent from 1873 to 1893, then entered the wholesale and retail coal business in which he is still engaged. Is also interested in the manufacturing business being president of the Johnson Gas Appliance Co., and is also interested in the real estate business being president of the J. S. Anderson Land Co., and the Mound Farm Land Co. Has been a director of the Merchants National Bank for a number of years. Has served as alderman of Vinton and Cedar Rapids, chairman of the park commission of Cedar Rapids, member of the republican state central committee, president of the commercial club and as postmaster from 1909 to 1913. Was married June 15, 1881 to Mae E. Williams and has four children, two boys and two girls. Is a member of the Masonic, Knights of Pythias and B.P.O.E. lodges. Elected on the republican ticket in 1916.
