HONORABLE ERNEST J. HEATON
MR. SPFAKER: Your committee, appointed to prepare resolutions commemorative of the life, character and public service of the late Honorable Ernest J. Heaton of Union county, Iowa, begs leave to submit the following report:
Ernest J. Heaton was born on August 12, 1860, near Fairfield, Iowa, and died on January 11, 1939. He came to Union county in 1891, where he settled on a farm near Shannon City, on which he lived until the time of his death.
He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church from his youth; also a member of the I. O. O. F., Woodman, and Masonic lodges. He was active in organizing the Union County Farm Bureau and was its first president.
In politics Mr. Heaton was a Republican and served as representative from Union county in the Thirty-fifth General Assembly.
He is survived by his wife, two sons, Foss Heaton of Creston, Iowa, and Edward Heaton of Chicago, Ill.; and by one daughter, Mrs. Robert Caswell of Knoxville, Iowa, one son, John Heaton, having preceded him in death in 1912.
Therefore, Be It Resolved, by the House of Representatives of the Fortyeighth General Assembly, That in the passing of the Honorable Ernest J. Heaton the state has lost a valuable and honored citizen, and the House would tender by this resolution its sincere sympathy to the surviving members of his family in their sorrow, and
Be It Further Resolved, That a copy of this resolution be spread upon the Journal of the House, and that the Chief Clerk be instructed to send an enrolled copy to the family of the deceased.
