They were among the early settlers in Howard county. His parents moved to Dakota and settled on a claim when he was a small boy. In 1888 he accepted a position as operator with the C. G. W. Ry. (then the C, St. P. & K. C. Ry.) and continued with that company for twenty years, filling positions as agent and operator at several different places in Minnesota, Iowa and Missouri; the last sixteen years as agent at Athelstan, Iowa. While agent at this place, he was elected county treasurer in 1908, and re-elected in 1910. He was married March 19, 1893, to Miss Nettie Scott, also a native of Iowa, having been born in Taylor county, and to them have been born two sons and one daughter. Elected senator in 1912.
