HONORABLE FRED W. JONES

MR. SPEAKER: Your committee, appointed to prepare suitable resolution commemorating the life, character and public services of the Honorable Fred W. Jones, a former member of the General Assembly of Iowa, begs leave to submit the following:

Fred W. Jones was born in Mitchell, Mitchell county, Iowa, on January 10, 1868, and passed away at Spirit Lake, Iowa, on June 13, 1937, at the age of 69 years.

He came to Dickinson county with his parents and assisted his father on the farm in Milford township until he purchased a farm of his own adjoining the old home. He was married to Miss Cora Miller, of Bentley Creek, Pennsylvania, on December 12, 1893, and to this union two children were born: Lewis W. Jones, of Spirit Lake, and Beulah, now Mrs. Glen Rodger, of Maywood, Illinois.

Fred W. Jones served his township as assessor for six years and was elected sheriff in 1899, his administration of this office was so successful that he was re-elected five times, serving thirteen years. In 1913 he was elected to the state legislature, serving from 1913 to 1916. For years he served as director of the First National Bank of Spirit Lake, Iowa. He served as a member of the board of supervisors for twelve years. During all his life he was actively engaged in farming and cattle feeding.

Fred W. Jones was made a Master Mason in Gloaming Lodge, Milford, Iowa, in 189l, and at the time of his death held membership in Twilight Lodge at Spirit Lake, Iowa. He was also a member of Spirit Lake Chapter of Royal Arch Masons and of Twilight Chapter, O. E. S.

Therefore, Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Forty-eighth General Assembly, That in the passing of the Honorable Fred W. Jones, the state has lost a valuable and honored citizen, and the House would tender by this resolution, its sincere sympathy to the surviving members of his family in their sorrow, and

Be It Further Resolved, That a copy of this resolution be spread upon the Journal of the House, and that the Chief Clerk be instructed to send an enrolled copy to the family of the deceased.
