Senator from the Forty-sixth District, composed of the counties of Cherokee, Ida and Plymouth, was born at Polo, Ogle county, Illinois, September 13, 1863. His parents were natives of Chautauqua county, New York, Has father's parents moved to Buffalo Grove, Ogle county, Illinois, in 1837, and his mother's parents settled in the same community a few years later. Mr. Sammis attended country school until thirteen years of age, then attended the graded school at Polo for two years, at the end of which period his parents moved to Oregon, the county seat of Ogle county. Graduated from the high school of that city in 1881, then attended a business college in Dubuque, Iowa, for three months, and in January, 1882, entered the office of Farley & Loetscher Manufacturing Company of Dubuque, as bill clerk. Retained this position for two years, when he was employed in the same capacity by Carr, Ryder & Wheeler of the same city. In February, 1886, went to LeMars, Iowa, and there commenced the reading of law in the office of Curtis & Durley. Was admitted to the bar in May, 1888, and was married on the tenth day of the same month to Fannie M., daughter of L. D. Randall, of Dubuque. Was collector of internal revenue for the third Iowa district from August, 1903, to April, 1906. Is a member of the firm of Sammis & Bradley at LeMars, and the firm of Shull, Farnsworth & Sammis at Sioux City. Has actively participated in every state and national campaign for twenty years. Elected Senator in 1908. A Republican in politics.
