Senator from the Twenty-ninth District, composed of the county of Jasper, was born at Newton, Iowa, January 14, 1878, of Swedish parents. He was educated in the public schools of Newton and graduated from the Newton High School in 1895. The year following his graduation he taught school and then attended the Newton Normal College. For five years he worked as a cigar maker. Graduated from the Law College of the University of Iowa in 1905. While a student at the university he was a member of McClain Chapter of Phi Delta Phi. He began the practice of law at Newton in August, 1905. Elected county attorney in 1906 and re-elected in 1908. Elected Senator in 1910. A Republican in politics.
