Senator from the Ninth District, composed of Des Moines county, was born of New England parentage near the village of Pleasant Grove, in above named county, on the twenty-eighth day of August, 1850. Was educated in the rural schools of the county, finishing with a course in Denmark Academy, Lee county, Iowa. Has been for years actively engaged in farming, raising, feeding and shipping stock and buying and shipping of grain. Is president of the Des Moines County Mutual Fire and Lightning Insurance Association and is president of the Bolton Hoover Coal Co., of Oskaloosa, Iowa. Has been engaged in the banking business since 1895, and is president of the Farmers Bank of Yarmouth, Iowa, and of the Farmers and Citizens Bank of West Point, Iowa. Elected Senator in 1900 to fill vacancy caused by the resignation of W. C. McArthur; was re-elected Senator in 1901 and in 1906, serving through the Twenty-ninth, Thirtieth, Thirty-first, Thirty-second and Thirty-second extra General Assemblies. A Democrat in politics.
