JOHN D. SHAFFER was born in Black Hawk County, Iowa, May 18, 1858, and died in Elgin, Fayette County, June 27, 1931. He attended public school, was two terms at Western College, and two terms at Upper Iowa University. He followed farming and the breeding of Percheron horses and Shorthorn cattle. He was also interested in banking, being at one time vice president of the Wadena Savings Bank, and later was president of the Elgin Savings Bank. He was assessor of his township, was a member of the Fayette County Board of Supervisors for six years, and was elected representative in 1903 and served as a member of the Thirtieth, Thirty-first and Thirty-second general assemblies.
