Theophilus Crawford
Dubuque County
Born in Vermont on April 28, 1806. Mr. Crawford learned the trade of surveying in Michigan, and came to Dubuque in 1842 where he located in new Wine Township. Later he lived for several years in Dyersville, and while there was a member of the board of supervisors. In 1844, he was a member of the constitutional convention and became the first state senator from this county serving in the First and Second General Assemblies, 1846-1848. He again served in the lower house of the legislature in 1850, 1858, 1870, and 1876. Later he lived on a farm in Vernon Township and in Peosta. Both as a member of the county board and of the legislature he distinguished himself by honest and ability. Mr. Crawford died in December 12, 1877.
