ADNA M. UTTERBACK

MR. SPEAKER: Your committee, appointed to prepare a suitable resolution commemorating the life, character and public service of the late Honorable Adna M. Utterback, begs leave to submit the following memorial:

Adna M. Utterback was the son of Josiah and Frances Utterback, born April 9, 1860 near Sigourney, Iowa. He lived his entire life in Keokuk County moving to Hedrick, Iowa, in 1890. His first of many business enterprises in Hedrick was a lumber and implement business. In the middle 1940’s Mr. Utterback sold his farm and livestock and became inactive in business.

Perhaps, his most outstanding enterprise, was the promotion of the kite race track just before the turn of the century. He was not the founder of the track but purchased an interest in the venture in 1892. He soon bought out his partners in the business and operated the track until about 1900.

Mr. Utterback served one term as a member of the Keokuk County Board of Supervisors. He was elected as a state legislator in 1901 and 1902.

He was united in marriage to Julie Hayes, who preceded him in death in 1934. He later married Florence Taylor of Martinsbug, who survives. Other survivors are three daughters, Mrs. Blanche Smith, Santa Ana, California; Mrs. Ruth Scholey, Glendale, California; and Mrs. J. J. Ries of Hedrick, Iowa. A son, Fred A. of Glendale, California, and a sister, Mrs. Rosa Hauser, Pasadena, California; nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. A son, Hubert A., preceded him in death.

Mr. Utterback died October 1, 1951, at Sigourney, Iowa.

Therefore, Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Fifty-fifth General Assembly of Iowa, That in the passing of The Honorable Adna M. Utterback, the state has lost an honored citizen, and a faithful, useful public servant, and the House by this resolution would express its appreciation of his service, and tender its sympathy to the members of his family.

Be It Further Resolved, That a copy of this resolution be spread upon the Journal of the House and that the Chief Clerk be directed to forward an enrolled copy to the family of the deceased.

MAHLON N. BROWN,

W. R. CHRISTIANSEN,

HARRY W. RAMSEYER,

Committee.
