John Gibson
Union County
No more successful business man can be found in the state than the representative-elect from Creston, Union county. His duties as vice-president of the Iowa Central Building and Loan association, and treasurer of the Anchor Mutual Fire Insurance company, corporations in Des Moines, keep him in this city a great portion of his time. Mr. Gibson was born in Columbiana county, Ohio, October 2, 1849. His father was a Methodist minister. Mr. Gibson is of Scotch descent. He was educated in the common schools, and the academy in Elgin, Ill. He located in Creston in May, 1878, driving across the country from Pueblo, Col. His wife and two sons were with him, and they were seven weeks making the trip. He practiced law in Creston until 1882, when he gave that profession up to follow other business interests. He engaged in stock and bond selling and in loaning money for eastern parties. He was one of the incorporators of the Iowa State Savings bank at Creston in 1884, and has been president of that corporation since its organization. In 1890 the Gibson Investment company was organized, and he has been its treasurer for three years. He also organized the Nebraska Central Building and Loan association of Lincoln in 1893, of which he is the president. In politics he has always been a republican. He takes a great interest in educational matters and has been one of the directors of the independent school district of Creston for the past eight years. He is a member of the Methodist church. He was married to Miss Tillie J. Martin, of Illinois, June 30, 1870, and they have three living children, Josiah, John M. and Jane, the wife of Frank Phillips, of Creston. Ten days before the Union county convention his friends prevailed upon him to accept the nomination for representative, which he did. Immediately after the nomination, Mr. Gibson went to Mexico, and upon his return found there was considerable of a local fight on, which he entered, and came out victorious at election.
