Born near Washington Court House, Ohio, November 5, 1844. On August 5, 1861, at the age of 16 years, he enlisted in company A, 1st Ohio Cavalry, reenlisted August 9th, 1863, and served until the close of the war. He was discharged in St. Louis and from there went to Washington state. He remained in the west for about a year and then came back to Iowa and Taylor county. He served two terms in the state legislature of Iowa and held other positions of trust in the county. He was married to Miss Mary Flick, October 31, 1868, at Platteville, Iowa.
