In casting about for an able man to represent them in the Twenty-seventh General Assembly, the republicans of Cherokee County decided upon the Hon. L. W. Beal as the man for the place. He was born in Rock Island County, Ill., January 20, 1838. He has been a resident of Iowa fifteen years. His first marriage was to Miss Lizzie S. Drum; the second to Miss Corelia A. Holly. He has two children, Dr. A. R. Beal and Miss Mae S. Beal. They are members of the Presbyterian church. Mr. Beal is identified with the K. of P. and the G. A. R. His soldier record is an enviable one. He enlisted in the army August 2, 1861, and was captured at Lexington, Mo., September 20, 1861. September 4, 1862,. he was commissioned captain of Company E, One Hundred and Twenty-sixth Illinois volunteer Infantry. He was promoted to the position of lieutenant-colonel August 12, 1864, and received the higher promotion of colonel May 11, 1865. His brother, Dr. A. M. Beal, is one of the best known educators in the state, having been professor of natural science of Western college at Toledo, Iowa, and vice-president of the same institution. Mr. Beal was county auditor of Cherokee county nine years, from 1889 to 1895. His political record, as well as his reputation as a citizen of sterling worth, augurs well for the service he will render his constituents in the house.
