Dubuque County

The junior member from Dubuque county this winter will be the Hon. Edmund J. Sauer of Dubuque. He was born in Rock Island, Ill., February 15, 1858, and has lived in Iowa thirty-three years. He received his education in the Fifth ward of the Dubuque schools, and after finishing school went south to New Orleans, then west to Fort Benton, Mont. Finding no place so good as Dubuque, he returned there and learned the ship carpenter's trade at the Eagle Point boat yards, and was appointed carpenter on the steamer Pittsburg of the Diamond Jo line. His natural inclination and studious temperament prompted him to turn his attention to engineering, in which avocation he perfected himself, and secured an engineer's license and the position of head engineer. He is now chief engineer of the Diamond Jo line, a position of trust and responsibility. Two years ago he successfully passed the examination for a captain's license. Captain Sauer helped to organize and became president of the Steamboatmen's Home association, an organization whose purpose it is to get the United States government to build a home for aged and decrepit steamboatmen at Dubuque with the money paid to the government by all licensed officers of Mississippi boats. During his business career Mr. Sauer has found time to study into politics, and he was one of the organizers of the Fifth Ward Democratic club, and its president, also president of the Bryan club. He has never sought nor desired public office, and at the time of his nomination for the position he will occupy this winter he was urging the candidacy of another man. He was nominated in the county convention by a unanimous vote. Mr. Sauer was married to Miss Emma Tuegel, September 29, 1881, and there are three children as a result of this union, two boys and a girl. He is identified socially with the Modern Woodmen lodge. He is a member of the Catholic Church.
