Born in Essex County, New York, March 29, 1829, the son of Rev. Leonard Dolph, a minister of the M.E. Church. He served in the civil war as corporal for Company B. 13th Vermont Volunteers. He entered the Methodist ministry in 1858 and served a number of charges in New York conference, and Upper Iowa Conference, giving 27 years of effective service. He later entered the newspaper field, publishing in turn the Eldora Ledger, Richland Clarion, Brighton News, Fairfield Journal and Wayland News. Rev. Dolph was twice elected to the Iowa Legislature from Hardin County. He was an enthusiastic member of the G.A.R. He married Miss Olive Cecil Beers June 24, 1852 in Crown Point, New York.
