HONORABLE PETER STILLMUNKES

MR. SPEAKER: Your committee, appointed to prepare suitable resolutions commemorative of the life, character, and public services of the late Honorable Peter Stillmunkes, of Dubuque county, Iowa, begs leave to submit the following report:

Mr. Stillmunkes was born in Westphalen, Germany, on January 7, 1844. At the age of two years he emigrated to this country with his parents. In June, 1867, he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Wieland, who died in 1907. Ten children were born to this union. On September 11, 1931, he was married to Miss Cecile Schmitt.

He was a man of sterling qualities, the possessor of many friends and he was always active in the affairs of his community, being secretary of the Independent School Board of Jefferson township for 67 years. In addition to his active interest in civic affairs he was prominent in banking circles throughout the state, being connected with various financial institutions.

Also, he was during his lifetime and at the time of his death a member of St. Peters and Pauls Catholic Church at Sherrills Mound, Dubuque county, Iowa. His death occurred on October 20, 1940, and he is survived by his wife and following children: Mrs. Mary Link, Big Lake, Minn.; Mrs. Charles (Louise) Link, Waukon, Iowa; John Stillmunkes, Dubuque, Iowa; Joseph Stillmunkes, Albuquerque, New Mexico; Dr. William B. Stillmunkes, St. Louis, Missouri; and Mrs. George (Laura) Brown, Los Angeles, California. Preceding him in death were three sons, Frank, Paul and George, his first wife, and one daughter, Mrs. John (Kate) Conrad.

Mr. Stillmunkes, a life-long member of the Democratic party, was elected as Representative in the lower House, serving two terms during the Twenty-fourth and Twenty-fifth sessions of the General Assembly.

Therefore, Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Forty-ninth General Assembly of the State of Iowa, That in the passing of the Honorable Peter Stillmunkes the state of Iowa has lost a valued and honored citizen, and the House belatedly tenders its sympathies to the surviving members of his family.

Be It Further Resolved, That a copy of these resolutions be spread upon the Journal of the House and that the Chief Clerk be instructed to send an enrolled copy to his surviving family.

J. W. MANLEY,

ROBERT C. REILLY,

F. E. SHARP,

Committee.

Unanimously adopted, April 3, 1941.
