HONORABLE GEORGE L. MITCHELL

MR. SPEAKER: Your committee, appointed to prepare suitable resolutions commemorating the life, character and public service of the late Honorable George L. Mitchell, of Jackson county, Iowa, begs leave to submit the following report:

George L. Mitchell, who represented Jackson county in the Twenty­second General Assembly, was born in Maquoketa, Jackson county, Iowa, June 18, 1858, and passed away at his home in Maquoketa, April 10, 1941, at the age of 82 years, 9 months and 22 days.

Mr. Mitchell received his education in the Maquoketa High School and the University of Iowa. On October 4, 1893, he was married to Jennie Squires in Maquoketa. He was associated with his father in the dry-goods business for a number of years, later taking the business himself. He was connected with the First National Bank of Maquoketa for 36 years, the last 15 of which he was president. He was a director of the Library board, City Treasurer for ten years and a member of the Iowa Legislature from 1888 to 1890. He was a 50-year member of all Masonic bodies and the oldest living Master of Helion Lodge.

Mr. Mitchell was a life-time member of the Congregational church, regular in attendance and active in its work.

Therefore, Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Forty-ninth General Assembly, That in the passing of the Honorable George L. Mitchell, the state has lost a valuable and honored citizen, and the House would tender by this resolution its sincere sympathy to the surviving members of his family in their sorrow, and

Be It Further Resolved, That a copy of this resolution be spread upon the Journal of the House, and that the Chief Clerk be instructed to send an enrolled copy to the family of the deceased.
