Born in Maquoketa, Jackson County, Iowa, June 18, 1858, and passed away at his home in Maquoketa, April 10, 1941, at the age of 82 years, 9 months and 22 days. Mr. Mitchell received his education in the Maquoketa High School and the University of Iowa. On October 4, 1893, he was married to Jennie Squires in Maquoketa. He was associated with his father in the dry goods business for a number of years, later taking the business himself. He was connected with the First National Bank of Maquoketa for 36 years, the last 15 of which he was president. He was a director of the Library board, City Treasurer for ten years and a member of the Iowa Legislature from 1888 to 1890. He was a 50-year member of all Masonic bodies and the oldest living Master of Hellion Lodge. Mr. Mitchell was a life-time member of the Congregational Church.
