Senator Edward J. Gault View All Years

Senator Taylor, from the special committee appointed to prepare suitable resolutions in memory of the late Hon. Edward J. Gault of Appanoose county, Iowa, submitted the following report:

MR. PRESIDENT Your committee to prepare resolutions in memory of the late Hon. Edward J. Gault of Appanoose county, Iowa, beg leave to submit the following:

Edward J Gault was born near Belfast, Ireland, June 1, 1828. His parents were both natives of the Emerald Isle. He came to America with his parents in 1839 and first settled in Philadelphia, Pa., remaining there about ten years. In the spring of 1853 he came to Appanoose county, Iowa, the place which was to be his future home and began to lay the foundation for a long and eventful career.

On the 25th day of December, 1853, he was united in marriage to Miss Sophia L. McClure. In the fall of 186l, Mr. Gault was elected as a member of the Legislature. In this capacity he served his county and State in such a manner as to bring credit to his constituency and honor to himself. In 1871, his county again called him into service, and this time he was elected to the State Senate. In 1853 he was again elected to the State Senate.

This closed another chapter in the life of a good man. One whose influence will be greatly missed in Appanoose county, and more especially in and about the town of Cincinnatti, which for fifty-one years had been his home.

WHEREAS, Hon. Edward J. Gault, a member of the Senate in the Fourteenth, Fifteenth, Twentieth and Twenty-first General Assemblies and a member of the House of Representatives in the Ninth General Assembly, departed this life at his home in Cincinnati, Appanoose county, Iowa, August 24, 1904, having reached the age of seventy-six years, two months, and twenty-three days; therefore be it

Resolved, That in the death of this noble man the State has lost an able and high-minded citizen and Legislator, who at all times was a staunch and untiring advocate of the interests of his people and his fellow citizens.

Resolved, That we join with his neighbors and friends in sorrow at their loss and hereby tender to his family our sincere sympathy in this, their hour of sorrow and bereavement; and be it

Resolved, That a copy of these resolutions be placed upon the records of the Senate and that a properly engrossed copy, authenticated by the Secretary, be sent to the members of the family.
