Born in Arbroath, Scotland, May 30, 1834, and is the son of William and Margery (Miller) Scrimgeour. He learned the machinist's trade in his native country, and in 1852 emigrated from Scotland to America. He made his home in New York City for two years, but, like many other enterprising young men of that city, turned his face Westward, in the hope of finding a larger field for future growth, and in 1854 came to Iowa and located at Toledo, Tama County. He was employed at his trade and milling until 1871, when he removed to this place and began reading law with Messrs. Johnson & Tewksbury, a prominent firm of this city. He was admitted to the bar in 1874. He possesses a keen, discriminating mind, and, although a Democrat, plain and outspoken in his views, and his party largely in the minority, has been chosen to fill various positions of honor and trust. He has served as Assessor of the city of Belle Plaine, has been a member of the Board of Trustees, Justice of the Peace, and four times Mayor. He was elected to the Twentieth General Assembly of Iowa from the 47th District (1883-84), and served on important committees. Mr. Scrimgeour was married at Iowa City, Jan. 10, 1861, to Miss Sarah Ward, daughter of Chauncey R. Ward. Mrs. Scrimgeour is a member of the Universalist Church.
