Born near the thriving town of Henrietta, Washington County, Ohio, June 30, 1840. He is the oldest living of a family of twelve children. Mr. Hall passed his boyhood days upon his father's farm, receiving his primary education in the common schools, and later attending a grade school one year. At the early age of eighteen he began teaching school, and taught six terms during the winters. In 1864 he entered the dry-goods store of Captain George Benedict, of Marietta, as clerk, where he remained two years. In the spring of 1866 he came to this city, and soon after embarked in the mercantile business for himself, opening a general stock of goods. As his trade increased he enlarged his stock until he became one of the principal merchants of Clarke County. Mr. Hall married Mrs. Clara Cramer in August, 1885. In 1881-83, Mr. Hall represented Clarke County in the Legislature. In 1881 he was elected State trustee of the institution for the feeble-minded, at Glenwood, and in 1886 re-elected for the term of six years. He is a Mason of high standing, being a Knight Templar and a member of the Scottish Rites. Politically he is a staunch Republican.
