Henry County
The nominations of the Whig Convention in Henry County we look upon exceedingly judicious. We have known Hugh R. Thompson many years. He is a practical printer and has worked in our office. We always found him to be punctual to his engagements. He will make an excellent representative. He has always exhibited an industry that never tired. When he could not obtain employment in his legitimate business, he turned schoolteacher. He has recently gone into the mercantile business in New London. Thompson died at sea sometime between September 1850 and April 1851. He had moved to California, and along with 3 others citizens of Henry county, James Baker, Joseph Moore, and Moore’s daughter Rebecca A. Lotspeich, left San Francisco, Sept. 20, 1850, for Panama. Upon return on board the brig Meteor, nothing had been heard from them or the vessel.
