John D. Evans was born in Pennsylvania in 1812. He received as good an education as the colleges of his State could give in the years of his young manhood, and chose the calling of civil engineer. He came to Davenport in 1838, and worked at his profession. In 1840 he was elected County Recorder, serving one term. In 1848 he was elected Representative to the Second General Assembly, which convened in Iowa City in December of that year. After that he served as Deputy Recorder and Deputy Sheriff, and worked as engineer when her services were desired. He came here with means. He was a gentleman in demeanor, very kind hearted, and very popular here in the old days.
He was married to Margaret E. Evans and had three children.
