One of the best known men in the county, at one time member of the state legislature, and a resident of the county since 1855. Mr. Baughman was born in Westmoreland county, Penn. on June 19, 1828 of "Pennsylvania Dutch" being the son of Jacob and Margaret (Cort) Baughman. In 1850, Mr. Baughman married Julia B. Schwartz, a native of Germany who came to the United States in childhood. In the spring of 1855, Mr. Baughman made his first trip to Iowa alone, then went back to Pennsylvania for his wife and children and came west again in the fall of that year. When he came he came across the old Mormon trail to Iranistan and came in a prairie schooner drawn by four horses He cut logs that winter and built a cabin on his claim and the cabin he then built was the first house in Pleasant township. In 1881, he was elected representative from this county in the state legislature and served two years therein.
