Josephus Clinton Porter
Decatur County
Born August 22, 1826, and was reared to manhood in eastern Ohio. He married Miss Matilda Catherine Gardner in Carroll county, Ohio. Mr. Porter first located in Clayton County in October 1853, but came to Decatur county the following spring. He was a minister in the Church of Christ and organized the first society in Leon on the first Sunday in June 1854. The popularity of the elder Porter was attested by the fact that he was twice elected to official positions in this county. In the fall of 1863, the republicans carried the county for the first time. Mr. Porter was elected county treasurer. In 1879, he was elected representative serving in the Eighteenth General Assembly and served for two years.
