Keokuk County
A native of Illinois where he was born in 1837. He studied law, was admitted to the bar and at the beginning of the Civil War was engaged in the practice of law at Sigourney in Keokuk County, Iowa. Upon the organization of the Thirty-third Iowa Infantry, he was commissioned lieutenant-colonel, in August, 1862. He commanded the regiment at the Battle of Helena where he was wounded. After the death of Colonel Samuel A. Rice he succeeded to the command of the regiment and was commissioned colonel. In 1883 he was the Democratic candidate for Congress in the Sixth District but was not elected.
