William Dennis Lucas

Story County

Born June 5, 1838, at Silver Springs, Wyoming County, N.Y. Mr. Lucas was engaged in the mercantile business in his native state. He assisted in the Fifth New York cavalry succeeding to the position of second lieutenant, from which he soon arose to that of captain. At the battle of Hagerstown, Maryland, July 6, 1863, with others of his regiment, he was captured and remained a prisoner of war for twenty months. Having been paroled March 1, 1865, Captain Lucas returned to his home in New York for a brief furlough, but soon afterward was re-enlisted and served with distinction until the close of the war. In the fall of 1866 he married and removed to Bristol, Illinois, from whence he and wife removed to Ames, Iowa. The following year Captain Lucas established the first bank in Story County. In 1883, he removed to Des Moines and became heavily interested in the Valley bank. Mr. Lucas was elected to serve in the 18th Iowa General Assembly, 1880, representing Story County. He was a member of the G. A. R. and the Loyal Legion.
